26th July: Foundation Day of
Awami National Party
Awami National Party (ANP) was founded on 26th
July, 1986. Bacha Khan’s son Khan Abdul Wali Khan became its first president
while Mr. Rasool Bakhsh Paleejo, prominent nationalist of Sindh Province,
became its first General Secretary.
Background
1915: Khan Abdul
Wali Khan, second son of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, was born.
1919: Bacha Khan
started his political career with a jalsa (assembly of protest) against Rowlatt
Act, which was participated by 50,000 people.
1921: Foundation
of Anjuman e Islahul Afaghana, with Bacha Khan as its first president and Mian Ahmad Shah as its first General Secretary.
1929: Foundation
of Khudai Khidmatgar Movement.
1937: In the general election, Khudai Khidmatgars
won 37 out of 50 seats in the province.
1946: In the
general election, Bacha Khan was elected as member of the Indian Legislative
Council.
1948: Bacha
Khan, along with J.M.Sayed, Abdul Majid Sindhi, Sheikh Hishamud Din and Khan Abdus Samad Khan Achakzai, founded the People’s
Party, which was the first Opposition Party in Pakistan.
1957: Bacha
Khan, along with Abdul Hamid Bhashani, J.M.Sayed and Mian Iftikharud Din,
founded the National Awami Party, which played
an effective role in the opposition of Z.A.Bhutto’s government.
1969: While Khan
Abdul Wali Khan and other NAP leaders were in prison in Hyderabad Tribunel case, the National Democratic Party (NDP) was founded, with Sher Baz Khan Mazari as
its first president. When Khan Abdul Wali Khan was released from prison, he
became the president of NDP.
1986: On 26th
July, the Awami National Party was founded, with Khan Abdul Wali Khan as its
first president.
1986- 1988: ANP
played an active role in MRD (Movement for Restoration of Democracy)
1990: In the
general election, Khan Abdul Wali Khan lost his seat of National Assembly from Charsadda. He was offered a seat in senate by his party and then by the then prime
minister Mr. Nawaz Sharif. But Wali Khan refused the senate seat. He also
resigned from the post of the president of ANP, saying that when he had been
rejected by the people of his home constituency, he did not deserve to be the
president of the party any more. He did not become the president of the party
again till his death.
1991: Ajmal
Khattak was elected as the president of ANP and Khan Abdul Wali Khan became the Rehbar e Tehreek (Leader of the movement)
1999: Mr. Ehsan
Wayin became the president of ANP.
2003: The son of
Khan Abdul Wali Khan and grandson of Bacha Khan Mr. Asfandyar Wali Khan was elected as
the president of Awami National
Party, who is still the president of the party, being elected for every term. Mian Iftikhar Hussain is the
General Secretary of ANP.
